The Cowboy spirit of the Goodnight-Loving Trail will roll
into the hills east of Albuquerque when the Founders Ranch Chuck
Wagon Gathering and Braggin’ Rights Cook-off commences during
the Single Action Shooting Society’s (SASS) END of TRAIL Wild
West Jubilee and Cowboy Action Shooting World Championships. The
27th annual event, attracting Cowboy aficionados from around the
world will celebrate its Classic Westen Movie theme at the organization’s
rustic 480 acre Founders Ranch located in the hills east of Albuquerque
in Edgewood, New Mexico.
Perhaps one of the most recognizable icons of the
Old West cattle drives, the Chuck Wagon outfits
of today go to great lengths to retain the original
wagons and devises used by Cowboys of old. Visit
the encampments and have a meal with any of the
outfits and it is easy to imagine yourself on a
cattle drive back on the range when the chuck wagon
was the center of work for the American Cowboy.
Like their predecessors, cooks competing in today's gatherings
cook over a fire pit in the ground, use a variety of hardwoods
for the fire, and rely on staples such as flour, potatoes,
dried beans, dried or canned fruit and, of course, beef for
their menus. The Cast iron skillets, pots and dutch ovens
favored by today's chuck wagon cooks are the same as the ones
used on trail drives in the late 1800's.
