The original Regulators in Lincoln County, New Mexico were a legally constituted and deputized posse, with warrants and affidavits issued by Justice of the Peace John Wilson and led by Special Constable Dick Brewer, John Tunstall’s ranch foreman. The Regulators’ primary aim was to hunt for the killers of John Tunstall. That was in 1878.
One hundred thirty five years later, today’s Lincoln County Regulators is the Cowboy Action Shooting arm of the Ruidoso Gun Club and an affiliate of the Single Action Shooting Society, known as SASS. Special Constable of the Lincoln County Regulators is Dirty Earl SASS #94084. Assisting the Special Constable are 1st Deputy Gunsmoke Cowboy, SASS #84261 and 2nd Deputy Rapid Ricky. Handling the books and the paperwork is Banker Dixie Wrangler SASS 97035.
The Lincoln County Regulators host a monthly Cowboy Action Shooting match at the Ruidoso Gun Club range on Hale Lake Road, a half-mile off Highway 70 in Ruidoso Downs, NM. They have developed a special Cowboy Action Shooting range, featuring the premier Cowboy Action Shooting town of Old Lincoln, a unique town which represents the historic town of Lincoln and even includes a replica of the Lincoln County Courthouse. Matches are generally held on the second Saturday of each month and notices will be e-mailed to the membership.
