More Information:
Cowboy action matches are held by the Rio Grande Renegades on the 2nd Wednesday, 3rd Saturday, and the 4th Sunday of each month. For months that contain either a 5th Saturday or a 5th Sunday (or both), there are also matches on those days. These matches are affiliated with the Single Action Shooting Society (SASS). SASS rules will be followed, and cowboy dress is requested. Please see our schedule page for more detailed information.
Effective September 2010, shooters are requested to show up at 10 AM for all matches (Wednesdays, Saturdays & Sundays) to assist in setting up. Shooting begins at or after 10:30 AM. All RGR matches are held at the Hayes City bays of the Albuquerque Shooting Range State Park (some call it the City Range).
A monthly practice session is held on the first Wednesday of each month, starting at 10 AM. Further information can be obtained by contacting English Lyn (see Contact page info).
The Cowboy Action matches are guided by the rules of the Single Action Shooting Society. To get more information about the Single Action Shooting Society, visit www.sassnet.com
Cowboy Action Shooting is a multi-faceted shooting sport in which contestants compete with firearms typical of those used in the taming of the Old West: single action revolvers, lever action rifles, and double barreled, side by side, pre-1899 pump, or lever action shotguns. The shooting competition is arranged in a unique Old West style.
Contestants shoot in several one- to four-gun stages (courses of fire) in which they engage stationary and reactive steel, and clay pigeon targets. Scoring is based on both accuracy and speed.
The truly unique aspect of Cowboy Action Shooting is the requirement placed on authentic period or western screen dress. Each participant is required to adopt a shooting alias appropriate to a character or profession of the late 19th century, or a Hollywood western star, and wear appropriate clothing.
American history buffs and serious shooters alike agree the use of vintage firearms, authentic costuming, unique targets, and fast action make Cowboy Action Shooting one of the most interesting of all shooting sports for both spectator and contestant.
