Ranger Cool returning from Fort Belknap decided to stop for the night knowing he could not make it to Tarrant before daybreak. It was going to be a chilly night as he refrained from starting a campfire for fear of being discovered by Comanches.

The Comanches have been on a raid out in the desert.

Raping and pillaging every white settler they come across.

The Indian was dressed in animal skins, his eyes were as black as coal.  The pony was shod, uncommon for an Indian pony, was the mount stolen or was this a half breed?  The image was etched into his brain and caused confusion.

In the morning the posse rose to bright sunlight and the smell of young Deputy Cole’s coffee. It was cold but the coffee and the fire helped warm things up a bit.

Waking up in a cold sweat, Ranger Cool quickly realized his sighting of the Indian and pony was just a dream. Dawn had just broken, and it was time he hit the trail again, as he should make it to Tarrant by noon. Throwing the blanket his wife had made him onto his mount and cinching his saddle, he was ready to get out of this God-forsaken place.

Pete told the posse, No food yet fellows, only coffee. Then we gotta hit the trail fast and hard. Get ready to mount up.

As we started out that morning I said to Ranger Ed, ‘Kind of drift off to the back of the posse and watch our back Trail.’ ‘This is wild country and the Comanche have been raiding.’ ‘We don’t want to get caught flat footed.’

We should split up the posse and circle around them, we used to do that with the cattle herds and it worked pretty well, said Rye.

Jerez closed his hand around Deborgille's fingers, feeling her tremor, seeing her shake:  when finally she swallowed and looked up at him, her eyes bright with memory, bright with tears, she whispered, "Can you forgive me?"

When the rest of the gang gathered up to leave town and ambush the posse, Maddog told them to leave his share in the usual place and to tell Brett Black that he would catch up in a week or two.

The posse caught up with the gang as they were filling their canteens at a creek.  Rye took out his trusty 73 and took a shot from horseback, he nailed one of the gang members in the head and he fell in the creek while he was filling his canteen. The others scattered like scared birds!

With the shot from Rye, the gang scattered into cover. The posse found cover on high ground and the fight was on. The shooting sounded like one continuous roll of thunder.

Back in town, Maddog walked the street and noticed all that was left was politicians, old men, women and children, Bottles and the saloon ladies.

Ranger Cool heard the sound of horse hoofs approaching him from behind at a fast pace. Fearing Comanche Indians, he guided his horse off the trail into the underbrush. A sigh of relief came over him as he saw the approaching Wells Fargo stage round the bend, and the Ranger returning to the trail just as the stagecoach driver pulled hard on the reins coming to an abrupt halt, a cloud of choking dust swallowing up the entire scene.

Miz Lorelei's expression betrayed her surprise as Jerez set the heavy poke in her hand, a poke that gave the distinct clink of coin:  Deborgille stood beside him, pale, her cheeks red, her eyes a little swollen from crying, but resolute, her hands around the dark-eyed man's arm.

The mayor, shop keepers, banker and important citizens of the town were complaining about the lack of protection from the never-do-goods and riffraff coming into town due to posse chasing Brett Black's gang when Maddog interrupted their meeting and offered his services to protect the town.
